Ulster
Savings Bank in Phoenicia will hold a show of work by Michael Mendel
for the month of July. Mendel was born in Germany in 1934.
He and his parents fled the Nazi regime of Adolph Hitler in the fall
of 1938, arriving in America in 1940 by way of Holland and Cuba. After
graduating from City College of New York ('56) and a stint as infantry
officer at Ft. Benning, GA., Mendel made art and design his career.
He opened his own graphic design studio in 1979 and became responsible
for the creation of hundreds of record album covers for artists like
Etta James, Tony Bennett, Gladys Knight, the N.Y. Philharmonic and the
soundtrack albums for "The Godfather" and "Serpico."
Mendel is a representational watercolorist, painting under the nom de
plume of ZEPEL. His paintings focus on everyday objects and activities.
He has participated in group exhibitions at The National Arts Club in
New York City, The Lyme Art Association in Olde Lyme CT., Woodstock
Arts Fair and The Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in NYC.
Mendel winters in Riverdale and summers at his 100-year-old farmhouse
in Fleischmanns, in the Catskill Mountains. At age 78, he shares his
busy life with his loving companion Barbara DellaFemina.
